The AFP Directions Program

The AFP Directions Program provides Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Australians with employment pathways into the AFP in a range of unsworn roles. Unsworn roles are administrative-based roles which do not require the execution of policing powers.

We are looking for people with the right skills, knowledge and an interest in pursuing a career with the AFP.

The AFP Directions Program Traineeship

The AFP Directions Program Traineeship is an integrated employment and career development program, delivered over 12 months. In addition to ongoing Canberra based (permanent) employment, participants will be provided with professional and personal development opportunities during the course of the program to enhance their capability to undertake a career in the AFP.

Traineeship positions are available at the AFP Band 2.1 level.

Successful candidates will have access to:

  • a structured 12 month learning and career development program, resulting in the award of a nationally recognised qualification (Certificate IV in Government).
  • the Malunggang Indigenous Officers Network (MION).
  • professional support networks that include current and past program participants who act as buddies, mentors and program support staff.
  • the opportunity to work with, and learn from, people with diverse backgrounds, experience and skills.
  • ongoing employment upon successful completion of the Traineeship and any specific employee probation requirements.

Eligibility

To be eligible you must meet and provide documentation to prove you are:

  • Of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Australian descent
  • 18 years of age or older (no upper limit)
  • An Australian citizen

You must be willing to:

  • Live in Canberra
  • Pass an employee suitability questionnaire
  • Be granted security and medical clearance
  • Provide fingerprint samples and undertake drug testing
